Day Twenty Five… Carving Some Burl in the Hot Sun… 06/04/15

IMG 2112

Folks… I woke up to this glaring #sun trying to get out and #warm us for a day after almost a week of constant #dampness and #rain… I had to take this opportunity to just lay out in the sun… So, I grabbed a new #book I am reading and set up my #LawnChair just outside #TheMillenniumFalcon…

Mind the squinting folks… A problem I don’t mind having…

After the sun retreated behind the #trees and I couldn’t find another spot in the #woods with glaring, uninterrupted #sunlight… I decided to retrace my steps and look for #TheDharmaBums book… Anyway, this was going to be my last day at this tremendous #campsite, so I wanted to go say goodbye to the river and that little #chaccuzi area I so much admired…

So I came down and said goodbye… I will have to come back here and take a #SkinnyDip someday… I’m a little disappointed with myself on this one but it was so cold… On a really hot day it would be perfect but until then, it will have to wait… I will make it back here though..

On my way back, I stopped at one of the other #campsites and saw this sign hanging from a tree… It says “R.I.P… Gus and Pauline’s favorite place…” How awesome is that? Someone climbed high up that tree to put that sign there… Very romantic and I hope Gus and Pauline are still enjoying this place, together… I’m sure it compares to places we visualize #heaven to be..

I found a good piece of that #burl I was talking about… I happened to see it on a tree that had been #uprooted by the #storm… It was a small piece that I would like to #carve later to show you how beautiful this wood can be…

I got back to #camp and immediately started teasing the #embers left from last night with some of that #gasoline bark I love to use… there is a ton of it out here so there is no reason for having a #fireless night, regardless of the #weather…

IMG 2123IMG 2122

Tonight I decided to leave with an explosion… literally… It’s #chili #night folks! I was tired of the rice, bacon, eggs and beans combo… I wanted something really different for my last night at this #campsite…

So, I put a can of beans, can of stewed tomatoes, half an onion, half a jar of left over arrabiatta sauce, a lot of pepper and hot sauce, some parsley, sage and paprika… I took a separate #fryingpan and fired my last 3 slivers of bacon all chopped up… That’s the only meat I had, so it wasn’t going to be meaty at all… I did have some canned tuna and #salmon but I just don’t think it would have tasted right, so I didn’t try it…

IMG 2124IMG 2125

I eventually tossed the #bacon in and got that fire #roaring so that chili would come to a boil… With the lack of meat, the chili was a little #saucy, so I was going to have to #cook it for awhile to get some consistency… There is nothing worse than runny chilli…

So while I was waiting for the chili, I gots a working on that #burl I found just like a real cowboy… Chili and #carving? You don’t get more #cowboy than that #folks! It was just a regular #hoedown at this campsite… #YEEHAW!

Here is the burl I carved and as I suspected, it was beautiful under all that #bark… Look at all the spiraling colors and this is only on a small piece… The larger pieces, that can be as big as a huge round #medieval table sometimes, get a lot more #elaborate and luxurious, then you polish and varnish it and you can swear you are looking at a piece of #marble #stone, until you touch it…

As you can see, I am going to make a #pipe out of this one… I had no plan to, I promise… There was a rotten area on this piece of wood that I happened to carve out, making a nice little #bowl for a pipe… I will have to pull out the drill and makes two channels to reach that bowl… I think it is going to turn out really nice… Don’t Judge! I will show you the results when done…

After about two hours of #cooking, the #chili was finished… I had to cook it for a half hour with the lid off to let some of the moisture #evaporate, so it would thicken… I also needed to add a little #ketchup, which is great to add to chill because it consists of a tomato base and adds a salt flavor to your chili at the same time… Shut up you snobby #Chefs… Ketchup is great for campfire and #cookout menus… I hate that ketchup gets such a bad name when it is perfect for certain occasions, especially when it comes to good old fashioned #hearty #AmericanCuisine…

The chili turned out pretty thick and was delicious… It could have been #meatier and would have been perfect with a pound of #beef in it but you can’t have everything out here in the #woods… If I ever do catch a #rabbit, I promise to make a chili with that… I’m petrified of the #skinning and #gutting process though… but if I want to be out here in the #wilderness, I need to learn such things…

It was #ShowerNight tonight, so I got nice and clean and went straight to bed, knowing it was going to be a long day tomorrow of #dumping, #refilling, #posting all these days to my #blog and getting to the next campsite… See you tomorrow #folks!

Tell the Traveling Mac what you think... be nice now...
