Day Thirty Two… A Hike to Stratton Pond… 06/11/15

IMG 2547IMG 2548

So here’s my next spot folks… I figured since I paid $2800 to get here, I would at least take advantage of one of the accessible #campsites… As you can see, I took no chances on this one… You could turn a passenger plane around in this campsite… lol.

I’m still recovering from all of this… It’s really put a huge damper on this trip and has cut my funds in half… I am trying to resolve it with #AAA because they are the ones who screwed up my account by not assigning #RoadSideAssistance for #RV’s to my account… Why I would want road side assistance for a car when I don’t own one is beyond me… But as usual, when it comes to these huge #corporations paying out, you are sent into a conundrum of complete shit… It took me two days for them just to get me to the right department, they are so fucked up! Now, the right person is trying to resolve this, I will hear the results on Monday… I know they are going to try and weasel their way out of this one. At this point I don’t care regardless… If they don’t reimburse me or partially so, then I will just have to move on and take it… I just don’t have the patience and energy to fight with these idiots anymore… I have wasted two days already… I’m just going to continue this #trip and get a job if I have to…

IMG 2485IMG 2486

I made an amazing dinner last night and it was by accident… I was overwhelmed with everything and didn’t want to cook really… So, what I did was take the rest of the ground beef and browned it in a pot… Then I added #TraderJoes Arrabiatta sauce… That’s it and it was delicious, really tasty! I had no noodles, so I took a box of my #GlutenFree #MacAndCheese and used the noodles from there… When they were done, I just mixed them in with the meat sauce to make an #AmericanChopSuey…

I had to take a picture of the temperature gauge, which I posted above to the right… It was exactly the same weather outside as inside… Weird, I guess… Oh, whatever!

IMG 2487IMG 2488IMG 2489

Now this really pisses me off! This was all around my #campsite! Really people! This is a #NationalPark and it is here for all #Americans for free and this is how you repay such privileges! I swear if I catch anyone on this trip doing such, I am going to confront them… Completely disgusting! Call me a #TreeHuggingLiberal if you want but this is just pure laziness and selfishness… I will be bringing all this garbage with me when I leave… I want to leave it till the last minute because I don’t want other peoples crap in my #RV…

IMG 2490IMG 2491IMG 2492IMG 2493

So I quit my sulking and forgot about AAA to go for a hike… I had a little touch of #CabinFever and I really needed a brisk #hike to clear my head. I tried two #trails that were right near my RV but they were so damaged, you couldn’t even follow them… So I headed down the main road to see if there was anywhere to hike…

IMG 2494IMG 2495

I finally found a trail down the street… I was stopped by a young lady doing surveys for the National Park… She asked me a few questions about why I was here and what I was doing… I gave her the whole spiel, she wrote some things down and I was on my way… I wish I remembered to tell her about the #garbage at my site but I always seem to lose my mind when an attractive girl starts asking me questions… lol.

IMG 2497IMG 2498

I was excited to see #StrattonPond was only 3.5 miles away… I had my #FlyFishing rod with me so I was ready to do some #fishing!

IMG 2499IMG 2500IMG 2501

These were quite interesting… I didn’t know their purpose but I assumed they were either #tracking how many #hikers were going on the trail or it’s to track #bears or #deer or something of that #nature… If anyone knows what they are, please let me know…

IMG 2502IMG 2503 1IMG 2505IMG 2506

There was no mind wandering on this hike folks… I was still obsessed with the last two days and I allowed myself to lull it over in my head… I figured a good hike and coming to terms with this complete shit show would help me get over all of this… So I let myself obsess and of course that was the time that a AAA representative called me to let me know the progress… I can’t wait until this is all a distant memory…

IMG 2509IMG 2510

This trail was a complete disaster… Here is a huge #tree that was uprooted my a #storm… the second picture is the dug out rooted part of the tree… Someone made a trail around it because it was so huge and hard to get over….

IMG 2515IMG 2516IMG 2517IMG 2519

It wasn’t long before I started seeing signs for the #pond and to my surprise they had a few signs for a #shelter… But I wanted to get to the pond first… I planned on seeing one of these shelters later…

IMG 2520IMG 2521

I finally approached the pond but was disappointed to see that the trails around it had been closed down because they were submerged in #water… The storms really did a number on this site…

IMG 2523IMG 2524IMG 2524IMG 2526

But it was still a very pretty pond… Here’s #TheTravelingMac… Damn, I need a shave, badly…

IMG 2527IMG 2528

I hiked around the pond as far as I could until I saw this nice little spot to sit and eat… I brought some tuna fish and also brought more than one #thermos of water… I didn’t want to get #dehydrated like I did the last hike… What a hike that was… It’s going to be hard to find any trail that will match it..

After I was finished eating, I put together my fly #FishingRod but I was missing a crucial part, so fishing was not happening today… Anyway, there were a ton of flies in the area… It got tiresome swatting the buggars away anyway… Though beautiful, I wasn’t very impressed with this spot…

IMG 2529IMG 2531

I headed straight over to check out one of these shelters and was surprised to see an #OutHouse that had actual plumbing… Some of these shelters are really nice… I guess a lot of people hike the #AppalachianTrail all the way to #Georgia… Along the way there are designated shelters and #camping areas…

I don’t know, maybe I will ditch #TheMilleniumFalcon and hike this trail… That would save a ton of money and what an adventure it would be… Every time I go hiking, I run into at least one person on this trail… People take off two weeks and rough it while hiking a part of this trail… I guess it takes like 3 months to hike the whole thing but I may be wrong…

IMG 2530IMG 2532IMG 2533IMG 2535

As you can see, the shelter was nothing short of awesome! It had #bunks along the side and a whole sleeping area up above… Shit, this place was better than most apartments I have lived in both #NYC and #L.A… It had everything you needed and was very clean and cozy…

IMG 2536IMG 2537

Here was a plaque and picture commemorating a man named #BobHumes and also tells how this shelter was built by #volunteers in 1999… I love this shit! This is the type of stuff that makes me proud to be an #American! No one is looking for any money, they are just trying to make a nice shelter for the ones who want to be out in nature… Beautiful! I wish there were more out there like Bob Humes and these volunteers…

IMG 2538

So I headed back and had a bad feeling I made a wrong turn somewhere… Well, this neat little #bridge confirmed my fears… I backtracked about a mile and found where I went wrong… Again, I took another wrong turn and ended up back at the pond… So I had to take out my #iPhone and look at my pictures to determine where I was, in respect to the signs posted… the pictures totally solved the mystery and I was back on the correct trail…

IMG 2544

This little guy crossed my path and I couldn’t resist snapping a photo… You would think I have never seen a #toad before… I grew up around these types of #woods folks… I guess nature never really gets boring…

IMG 2549

I finally got back to my #BucketOfBolts… It was 85 degrees out today so I went ahead and put up my #SunReflector for my front window… Now I expected it to work some but wow, was I shocked… It was really cool in my RV and this windshield reflector was definitely keeping the heat out… I knew they were good to have but I didn’t know they were so effective… All that time I was blasting the #A.C. to cool down my living area and the culprit was the #windshield… You live and learn folks… This trick is going to save me a lot of money…

Anyway, sorry for all the negativity… I promise I will come around in a few days… I just need to get used to the fact and then I will be fine… Till tomorrow, which I hope will be a better day…

  1. Dan, invest in a winch or a come along. You might run into that issue again and may be able to use it to pull yourself out. Either way it’s a great tool to have especially with you being alone and up to your own devices. Helluva lot cheaper than that beating you just took too. Been enjoying your blog so far. I know myself and i’m sure a lot of other people would love to do something like this but I know I’d have to have my motorcycle and would want to travel a little lighter. Although planning to go a year off the grid is quite an ordeal so, who knows. I’m sure you’re in for a few more surprises. Good luck man. Ill be reading.

    1. Jim,

Thanks for the advice… I will definitely look into a winch… I know for a fact if I had that device I could have pulled myself out… Even the tow truck driver was shocked I couldn’t get out because it was so minor but when you are by yourself and the tires aren’t touching the ground, you can’t do much… If another person happened to drive by I could have gotten out with a second hand… but I was so way out there, no one drove by the whole time… Thanks for keeping up with my blog… It will just get more interesting as I continue… I don’t know why but I seem to always have an adventure with whatever I’m doing… I definitely don’t lead a boring life…
