Day Seven (CDR)… The Mystery of the Taylor Park Family… 08/11/15

Well folks, if you were ever wondering what a man who lives in the #Colorado #Mountains full-time looks like, here he is… The man cooking #omelets is the owner’s son in law and he runs the #restaurant… They have this really cool Omelet and Waffle buffet at #TheNuggetCafe where you pay $10.25 and you can get all the waffles and omelets you can eat…

You just tell your #waiter you want the all u can eat buffet and then you go up, fill a little cup with all the ingredients you want in your omelet and give them to Chris to cook… This is a great concept because it takes a lot of pressure off of the already busy #kitchen, there’s nothing like omelets to slow down your busy progress… Also, it’s fun for the customer to pick their own ingredients and watch as their omelet is made… Chris also has a waffle iron where he just pours the batter in and makes you fresh waffles right before your eyes…

If for some crazy idiotic reason I ever decide to open a restaurant that serves #breakfast, I will definitely use this concept… There really is no downfall to this approach… you just need someone who knows how to make really good omelets and a few hot plates to cook on… Chris has got the whole process down to a science… He even has a special way of setting up the omelet buffet with 5 hot burners and ready greased, perfectly clean omelet pans… He is meticulous about his omelet station and serves huge crowds without much of a wait… you hardly ever see anyone else working the #buffet station, Chris is so good at it… He even gets a little perturbed if you try to mess with his station, not that I would want that job in the first place…

While we are on the subject, let’s talk about Chris…. Remember I was all excited to come and work for a #FamilyRunBusiness? I was so excited with the fact Chiris didn’t hardly know how to use e-mail or a computer, knowing this was the perfect place to get away from it all… Well, Chris has become more than that to me now… I completely admire how this man leads his life…

Chris and his family live out here all year round… He has a beautiful wife and four lovely children ranging from 8 to 17 years of age… Chris and his wife home school their kids… Him and his family have separated themselves from the technological terror we deal with everyday… That doesn’t mean he doesn’t work his ass off… From May 1st to Sept 13th, Chris and his family work like crazy… Chris doesn’t even take one day off for the whole #season and he is at the restaurant from open to close…

When I talk to Chris I get tired just looking at him… His eyes are always bloodshot and he talks as if he is conserving energy with every word… But don’t let the slow paced conversation and tired look fool you because when it’s busy, Chris is practically impossible to keep up with! Not only does he make amazing omelets in a very reasonable amount of time for a large crowd of people, he is always tirelessly helping an overwhelmed #waitstaff by busing tables, taking orders and running food… Once that emergency switch is turned on, Chris is impossible to keep up with…

But when the chaos is over and everyone is gone, it’s like Chris reaches back and turns that switch off and you wouldn’t even know we just got hammered all day… He will be back to his calm, reserved self, ready for the next day… I certainly don’t envy Chris’ work situation but I do find myself attracted to his peculiar lifestyle… I am constantly asking him questions about how it is living #OffTheGrid… I see his 17 year old daughter watering plants every morning and helping out at the gift shop… They all work as a family and they all work hard…

I don’t know if I would want my children so separated from #society to this extreme but I can’t help feel this family is way better off than the average ones we are used to… It’s easy to look in from a stranger’s point of view and see it as perfect because we all know everything is different behind the scenes but they all seem so damn happy… I would love to spend a year with this family, filming their everyday life, to see how it is like living off the grid… If I ever do have a family I would like to adopt some of Chris’s approach, especially when my kids are younger…

By no means do I think I would want to go to this extreme but I feel a good balance between the world I live in and the one Chris has built for himself is a great approach…. I just wonder what will happen to these kids if they decide to go away to college… I can’t help but feel they would be socially behind in a world that is already too busy for its own good… But then again more and more people communicate via the web… So, since the family has their own private internet up here, I guess they could learn a lot about people and the world online… But I can’t help but feel the hands on approach is better but what do I know… What does anyone know in this ever changing, crazy world? It’s not such a bad thing to try it out for at least a couple of years and I think the best time to do this is when your family is young…. I would love to keep in touch with Chris and see how his family turns out when all the kids get older… If they all turn out normal and better off than me, then I may just be joining Chris up here with my newly thought up family…

So, I worked a double and made it through the first long day… It was really busy all day and I was exhausted by the time #TheNuggetCafe closed… Here’s a picture I took on my break of two birds on a telephone wire I thought was cute…

Now there they are flying away… The #birds seem to home school and do quite well… maybe this is an old approach that will help us in the future… It’s definitely an approach I will seriously contemplate when and if I ever have a #family… I guess time will tell when it comes to Chris’s approach and you know I will be watching to see how it turns out… For now, I will just admire him blindly, intrigued by an approach that has been in the back of my mind for sometime now…

Tell the Traveling Mac what you think... be nice now...
