So, for the first time in The Traveling Mac’s and Tracey’s life, we woke up in Canada… If you look above, you will see the new water heating system mounted to the outside of The Millennium Falcon… I just tuck that #PropaneTank under the falcon and lay all of the other equipment on the shower floor inside of #TheFalcon… It takes me literally 5 minutes to hook up and put away..
We parked at a #Walmart in #Chilliwack,B.C and had some Papa Johns last night… The mood was a little more light now… We had tackled a bunch of minor problems and had gotten across the border with no issues…
So, we soon hit the road and started #traveling… It was #raining out again, so we planned on driving all day…
This part of the #trip was blah… It was a lot of #civilization with some beautiful views.. But it was very up and down… the roads were twisting and turning… I was still getting used to the metric system here, trying to calculate how fast I should be going… And the rain kept on drifting in and out as we changed elevations… So, I had to also control the wipers while I was trying to control this monster, barreling along these crazy, wet roads…
I know I sound a little over dramatic here but when you have all of this going on and directions that seemed to be taking us every which way, you get extremely short tempered…
I just wanted to get out into the middle of nowhere… Where I can set my #RV to cruise control and enjoy the sights with hardly any turns or cars on the road…
But for now, I would just have to suck it up and get through it… I was just anxious to see the #CanadianCountry and I was worried we had gotten too far behind on this trip…
Traveling is not easy folks… It seems #adventurous and romantic but it is very difficult at times…
You have long hours of driving… You are sitting all of the time, so your body gets a little out of whack… Your sleeping suffers because you are not really getting the exercise you need…
Tracey and I are pretty active people with very active jobs… So, when we travel like this, it takes a physical and mental toll on us…
We soon got to some nice open road… It was still very up and down but I was able to set the #CruiseControl …
It’s weird because #Canada does feel like a #ForeignCountry even though it shares the same continent we do… It’s a vibe up here… Something in the air… I’m convinced if someone knocked me out and took me across the #CanadianBorder, when I would wake up, I would immediately know I am in Canada… lol!
I heard that the first few hundred miles wouldn’t be that impressive in Canada… It’s when you hit the #Yukon, that’s when you start seeing some crazy shit…
Actually, #TheTravelingMac has heritage in Canada… My dead beat Dad’s Dad was from Quebec or Toronto Canada… I guess my Grandfather wanted nothing to do with my Dad either… Oh how we follow in our parents’ footsteps… The irony is enough to alert the dumbest of people…
I was thinking if it gets too crazy in the #UnitedStates with the orange headed #POTUS, I could just move to Canada, since I have immediate family there… But if I’m not safe in the #U.S… How will I ever be safe in the neighboring country?
I did actually say that if #Trump ever became President that I would either move back to England or Canada… I guess I should keep to my word… But isn’t driving up to #TheLastFrontier just as good as retreating to Canada? At least I can keep an eye on the #Russians for Trump from up there… lol! That’s only if I get some property next to #SarahPalin…
We just drove, drove and drove all day… We soon parked at another #Walmart in Quensel,B.C… This would be the last Walmart we would see for a long while…
We woke up ready to get out of #civilization… I was so excited!
But first we had one more chore to do…. Don’t worry folks, #TheMillenniumFalcon is o.k… This trip is more than 4,000 miles long, so it was time for an #OilChange at #MotherlodeQuickLube…
My engine is still under warranty until the end of the summer… So, I have to get the oil changed by a professional and have them sign a form stating it was done… I can’t wait to just be able to do them myself… Sometimes finding a place that will change your RV’s oil is a huge task that can take a day to accomplish…
We picked the perfect time to get it done… Right before we head into a volatile, adventurous drive… Tracey made us some sandwiches while we waited for The Falcon…
And that brings me to my next subject… Never had I heard of this road condition before I decided to travel to #Alaska…
But one of the first things people who have driven to Alaska will alert you about is the #Permafrost… This is a road condition that is a result of the soil being frozen under the roads for two years or more… This creates major, drastic dips in the road which are unpredictable and very dangerous… And since #TheMillenniumFalcon is doing this trip right after the winter has mostly left, we are taking a huge risk because the permafrost locations haven’t all been marked and definitely have not been addressed…
So, you could basically be going a nice 40 mph clip and all of the sudden your whole vehicle dips and lurches up, making a huge, horrible crash as it bottoms out and almost lunges you off of the road… Many travelers have lost axles on the #ALCAN, #TheAlaskanCanadianHighway, in result of Permafrost… It is one of the biggest vehicle obstacles along this trip…
We were soon in #PrinceGeorge,Canada and heading towards the #WhiteHorse,YukonTerritory… This is where the drive gets really challenging and we start to drive #OffTheGrid…
Another hassle #travelers face driving through the Yukon and up the ALCAN is losing their #windshield… Everyone I have talked to so far has said they lost their windshield traveling up to Alaska… So, of course The Traveling Mac treats this as a challenge… I want The Millennium Falcon to make it to Alaska without losing her windshield! If there is anyone who could do it, it’s Old Millie!
We hit a dump and refilled with water right before we headed into the #CanadianWilderness… This part of the trip was really exciting because we didn’t know what to expect… We were nervous but excited at the same time…
Tracey and I work well as a team on the road because she is the sensible one and I am the get it done one… I always hit a challenge full force while Tracey takes her time and maps it out… I think many times Tracey saved The Millennium Falcon from utter disaster… She is always the one reminding me to slow down and be cautious while I’m anxious to get moving…
We clash sometimes but its definitely a good combination when traveling… Tracey thinks out the trip and how to get there safely while she allows me to act like a looney while keeping me on a short leash… lol! Her job is very challenging to say the least…
And Tracey’s cautious ways probably averted a disaster here… We suddenly hit this thick, #DenseFog… I wanted to keep on driving, going slow of course but Tracey wouldn’t have any of it… We literally couldn’t see more than a few yards in front of us, so it was a wise decision…
Another benefit to doing most of your traveling through Canada is the extra daylight… We are at the tail end of the winter up here and it only gets dark for a couple of hours each night… So, you can travel until 2am and it will still be light out… Considering Tracey and I are not morning people, this works out swimmingly…
We can take our time in the morning knowing we can travel late into the night with no problems… As long as it doesn’t get this #foggy every night, we should be good to go…
We pulled off at a #turn-off along the way… Canada has a strict no parking at the #RestStops policy… But there seems to be no signs prohibiting such at the #pull-offs… We figured we would take our chances considering it was so early in the season and there’s no where to park because most of the #RVResorts aren’t open yet… We are literally one of the only travelers on this road! It’s kind of eery really…
It was a gorgeous night out… you could even see the moon through this dense fog… We were now well on our way to Alaska! We are now eating the meat and bones of this trip where we will see all kinds of crazy #wilderness with hopefully a lot of #wildlife…
The true challenge has started folks! Will the MillenniumFalcon, Tracey and The Traveling Mac make it to Alaska? What new challenges will they face? Will they get delayed once again?
I guess you will have to stay tuned for the next post… But I will guarantee you this… It definitely won’t be a boring adventure!
